How to wear colour

PRODUCTS| 15.04.2021

They’ve taken their sweet time, but the warmer days of spring are finally here. Paving the way for the truly freeing summer season we can’t help but feel excited for the heady days of summer. Memories of BBQ’s, good music, beach days; any excuse to celebrate under the sun. The freedom of summer may seem far away right now however; that leaves us with plenty of time to get in the mood and work on our wardrobes in preparation.

How we get dressed can have a huge impact on how we feel and in recent months, comfort has been key, with loungewear top of the agenda. So, it’s time to put the fun back into getting dressed and what better way to do that than draw inspiration from the invigorating change in seasons and project a sunny outlook through bold, punchy colour choices?

If you’re someone who fears colour or just needs some pointers as to how to wear it, then this one’s for you. We’ve put together your one-stop guide for injecting colour into your wardrobe. From bright neon to pastels and beyond, over the next few minutes, we’ll show you how to add a super stylish pop of colour to your everyday look.

Ease into layers.

You’re in a colourless rut, but you find bright hues daunting. The easiest and simplest way to introduce bright colour clothing is via a simple, single layer.

A bright neon hoodie or neon t-shirt layered under your favourite classic black jacket provides a pop of colour without making too bold a statement. Our Ruston is a classic regular fit bright hoodie serving up a punchy yellow, perfect for everyday layering.

Or stay really on-trend and choose bright pink, tipped to be the hottest colour trend this season. Our Porterdale cropped tee in light pink is a subtle play on this huge trend.

Layer on a colourful hoodie.

Try tonal dressing.

Head-to-toe colour may not be for everyone but, if done right, it can almost trick the eye, offering up a uniform, minimalist look.

Perhaps avoid neon brights for this one and stick to more low-key tones of primary colour blue, maroon or teal.

One of our main colour themes this season is Fog blue, a light blue hue that runs throughout some of our best loved styles, including our classic 873 Work Pant, Porterdale tee and Icon Logo hoodie. Wear together for an eye-catching tonal look and conjure instant sartorial cool.

How about revisiting a classic?

You know what suits you and you’ve probably got a stack of jeans and tees that you reach for on a daily basis. They fit you perfectly, so why not use this as a solid foundation upon which to experiment with bold colour?

Our Short Sleeve Work Shirt falls into this camp. A much-loved style staple, we’ve reworked it in vibrant yellow. Layer over a tee or wear on its own; one thing’s for sure you’ll instantly be summer-ready.

Or try upgrading to a colourful classic crew neck sweatshirt; be comfortable, vibrant and cool.

A statement jacket is a great way to introduce colour.

Experiment with a statement jacket.

A bold, statement jacket can instantly lift your mood and that of those around you. It’s also a super quick and easy way to freshen up a look and introduce bright colours. We guarantee you’ll instantly turn heads and present effortless style.

Our Toccoa jacket in mellow green is a muted take on neon green and a perfect piece to transition from warm days to cooler evenings.

If you love a classic, our Eisenhower jacket also receives the mellow green treatment. You could even put into practice the aforementioned tonal trick and team with a pair of 874 Work Pants in matching green for an ultimate style statement.

Still not sure? Pastels could be for you!

If bold colour strikes fear in your heart, a soft pastel hue could be your happy medium. Pastels are a subtle and simple way to introduce colour without feeling overwhelmed by it.

Better yet, styling calm pastels with a more structured look makes for a perfect pairing that conveys effortless cool. Give it a go with our Kiester jacket and Cropped 874 in fog blue, which fully embraces this stylish look.

If utilitarian styling is more your thing, our Dovray Short Overall in soothing mellow green takes the pastel theme to playful new heights.

Or dabble in the pink trend this season and try light pink. Our Oakport High Neck sweatshirt is available in a hoodie too. A surprisingly universally flattering shade.

Play with pastels.

Go heavy on bold accessories.

Still not ready to make the leap to full colour? One subtle and sure-fire way to work colour into your overall look is through accessories. Nothing screams summer more than a bright canvas bucket hat.

Our Clarkes Grove style is available in a very fetching Crayola bright yellow, ideal for the transitioning seasons. If functional carrying solutions are more your bag, our Lisbon backpack in fog blue presents a stylish option that will elevate neutral staples. The baseball cap trend makes a return this season.

A tireless celeb favourite (think Kendall Jenner, Kaia Gerber), the baseball cap is dependable and accessible. Seek out one in a vibrant colour to update your look instantly.

Hopefully, we’ve gone some way to show you that colour doesn’t have to be feared. There are many ways to adapt the look to suit your needs and make it work for you. Step away from the monochrome, momentarily at least. It’s time to be bold and inject some colour (and joy!) into your wardrobe today.
