The Ultimate T-Shirt Fit Guide

PRODUCTS | 01.04.2021

Do you find yourself forever in search of a perfect fitting T-shirt? It’s a quest we’ve all found ourselves on at one time or another. A closet staple that can go a long way and with absolutely everything. It’s fashion’s safest bet.

However, one size does not fit all, nor does one style suit all. Oversized, cropped, V neck, muscle fit, branded or graphic tees? The search can be tiresome and not always fruitful.

Thankfully at Dickies, we’ve got you. Our broad range of fits and styles aims to bring an end to ill-fitting T-shirts. Looking to give your wardrobe a refresh or a statement piece in which to express yourself? Look no further and read on to explore the range, gather styling tips and draw inspiration from some very stylish wearers.

Look to the past to determine your future.

T-Shirts got their name from the T-shape formed by their boxy body and attached sleeves. A wonderfully versatile garment, the humble tee began life as an underwear item. Worn as a barrier to protect more expensive garments from perspiration, the T-shirt eventually evolved to become an outerwear piece and workwear staple. Evidence of the T-shirt being worn as an outer garment dates back to the late 19th century. Labourers would cut down their coveralls to keep cool during the warmer months. Today a T-shirt is a definitive style essential with the ability to outlast trends or even make a rebellious statement if you want it to.

The first step in selecting your perfect tee is to ascertain your needs: what’s the occasion? Beach? Party? Work? Or all three?

Layer a short-sleeved tee over a long-sleeve for laid-back cool.

The perfect fit.

The way a T-shirt fits speaks volumes about you. You have to get the fit just right and once you’ve found it stick with it! This is a staple that will never date. Do you prefer a longline fit? Or perhaps you’re more boyfriend fit than tight muscle tee? Is a long sleeve more your thing? Would a cropped tee emphasise your best bits?

A well-fitting tee is never restrictive and should allow for easy movement. The ultimate end goal is a comfortable fit that looks as good as it feels on. A well-fitting plain white tee, although simple by design can add a level of suave that cannot be underestimated. Pair with your favourite pair of jeans or work pants and you’re onto a winning look.

You can’t go wrong with a classic Icon Logo tee.

Fabric choice.

The material a t-shirt is made from can really elevate a look. A thicker fabric adds weight and can sometimes convey a higher quality. Conversely, lightweight fabric is a must in summer. Cotton or a cotton blend of some kind is a useful component in keeping the wearer fresh and cool. Cotton fabrics are traditionally breathable, easy to iron and wash. It’s a tried and tested fabric and an ideal choice for a reliable everyday garment.

Our Ruston tee is made from 100% cotton. Comfortable, clean and versatile, keep a stack of different colourways in your wardrobe for an instant update to your look. Alternatively, the Porterdale Cropped Tee is crafted from soft but durable cotton jersey. Presenting comfort and style.

Dickies Porterdale T-shirt features a single patch pocket.

Branded, bright hues or graphic tees?

Black, white, grey and navy are timeless shades that serve as the basis to build out and layer up your overall look. A plain white tee is easy and goes with everything. Black and navy tees generally look smart and modern without the need for much in addition.

If you’re feeling bold, you may wish to inject a brighter hue into your wardrobe. If that’s the case our Porterdale tee comes in an array of colours. Featuring a discreet chest logo, relaxed fit and available in both men’s and women’s fits.

Perhaps a branded t-shirt is more your thing? Our Mapleton tee in super comfortable jersey cotton could be for you. Or perhaps you could get into some of the fun graphic designs out there and mix up your look with a graphic print. The T-shirt is the perfect blank canvas to realise all your print dreams. Chest print? Backprint? Sleeve print? The possibilities are endless.

Style inspirations.

You’ve found your perfect tee but how should you wear it? You could play with proportions like Zoe Kravitz. Seen wearing our classic Icon Logo tee, featuring our iconic ox collar logo. Zoe’s chosen to wear it oversized and teamed with a mini pleated skirt and sneakers. Or go long-sleeved and tucked into a pair of our Double Knee Work Pants akin to ASAP Rocky.

Actor Sophie Turner paired a cropped Dickies logo tee with black high waisted trousers for an effortless day to night outfit. Grab a pair of Elizaville Work Pants to emulate the look. Or layer up. The T-shirt after all is the perfect layering item. Wear it under your favourite jacket for a casual yet well put together look or with an open shirt. Our iconic Sacramento shirt is available in multiple colourways to suit any mood.

The foundation on which so many great outfits are built, it’s no wonder that the T-shirt has stood the test of time. Easy, timeless and the simplest way to refresh your wardrobe. For men’s and women’s T-shirts with maximum comfort and style, Dickies has you covered.
