Tartan Reworked: How to nail the latest trend

PRODUCTS | 15.10.2020

Is tartan in fashion in 2020? Yes! The rebellious trend has returned with a new look and we are celebrating with a new collection. Add an edge to any outfit with this striking pattern reimagined for a new decade.

What does a tartan mean? Originally made in woven cloth, this iconic style boasts a criss-cross design that is packed with history. Born in the Highlands, classic Scottish clan tartans had their own distinctive colours and patterns years ago.

Ready to tackle Scottish tartans with a twist? Before you try out this new trend, read on for key do’s and don’ts of this epic look. Whether you're seeking a tartan shirt in women’s styles or statement tartan trousers for men, the tartan collection is made for you. What's the Gaelic word for "cool"? We'll get back to you on that one.

First, test the waters with a trouser

Easy to wear and versatile, even the tartan timid will feel confident starting here. Not sure how to wear tartan trousers? Mixing a loud pattern with basic picks in achromatic colours is the way to go. Pair with a black, white or grey tee to let the pattern shine bright.

Pair a slim fit or tapered pant with military-style boots and an oversized knit, embodying a nonchalant off-duty style anyone would envy. Take your look to the next level by pairing with a blazer and heels. For wide or straight leg trousers, we love the ever hard-working, white trainer. To take it up a notch, we recommended playing with proportions. Add style to slim trousers by rolling up those hems!

Be bold with colour combinations

We’ve taken the classic red tartan to a new level with eye-catching colour combinations. Try mixing and matching bright yellows, pretty pinks and purples, and more vibrant blues to complement the classics this season.

In both our men’s tartan clothing collection and women’s tartan clothing looks, we’ve paired traditional shades with bright hues that won’t disappoint.

Go ahead, go all out

Yes, you can wear head to toe tartan if you dare! If you’d like to go that route, we recommend sticking with the same fabric throughout. For the fashion-forward, take it one step further with a plethora of plaids in one outfit. Just like our western trend, we’re throwing the rules out the window this season.

Find the perfect outerwear

From blazers to bombers, your outerwear has never looked better. Traditionally tartan fabric was made in heavyweight wool, perfect for the colder seasons; however, it’s now made in a variety of materials including lightweight cotton and silky blends. Our Iberia Jacket is made from 100% cotton for extra comfort. Layer outerwear over roll necks for the winter months, or go back to basics for the in-between seasons. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, go for a double-breasted coat all season long.

Wear bold tartan shirts to layer

Effortlessly chic, the tartan shirt will keep your style status in check. In spring and summer, lighter shades will keep you cool. Wear it opened and unbuttoned with your favourite denim and a plain tee, or button up and over a roll neck for added warmth in winter.

Shirt dresses are fabulous multi-seasonal wardrobe additions. Layer with roll necks and thick tights or simply pair with boots if the weather permits.

Find your perfect match

Wondering how to build your tartan outfit? Whether it’s a black leather jacket, skirt or coated trouser, we think leather adds a dash of danger to the classic pattern, creating a look that’s sure to turn heads.

Keep it simple and pair with staple denim, or channel punk rock chic with a touch of tulle. Don’t be afraid to mix tartan with activewear and workwear. We think a chic blazer or a comfortable zipped hoodie will partner perfectly.

Go bold

To round up the tips of the trend we’d suggest that you choose bold colour combinations for a modern take on this classic. Be playful with patterns and palettes; mixing a variety of tartans in the one outfit is certainly bound to create a refreshing look.

The trouser is the perfect piece to introduce you to the trend. Pair with staples, including cotton tees or cosy knits; and dial it up or down with a choice of dressy shoes or trainers. We love leather as the perfect sidekick; a leather jacket with a tartan trouser is the ultimate combination we are coveting this season.

Layer shirts with basics and jeans for a casual outfit that rocks. When the temperature drops, envious outerwear such as double-breasted jackets in a tartan will keep you warm and feeling like you’re fresh out of the Scottish Highlands. Top tip: don’t forget your accessories when you hit the streets (tartan facemask, anyone?).
